Modified Mountain Bike for Commuting

I quickly got down to a neighbourhood cycling shop in Sungai Way (Fook Sang Bicycle Shop) and found myself an affordable entry level Jamis mountain bike, the 2008 Durango 1 and got it modified to be suitable for commuting approximately 20km (one way) once I have the skills and stamina. The mechanic exchanged the mountain bike tyres with road tyres and adjusted the ,saddle height to suit my size. He provided a bicycle lock, an Iron-Mag helmet, front lights, brake lights and cat-eye to make the ride safer.

It would be another 2 weeks before I would try cycling to work. Meanwhile, I will have to train my stamina in the SS2 and Taman Tun Dr Ismail / Bukit Kiara surrounding daily.I have started a Cycling Professionals Google Group to trace a suitable route to take from SS2 to USJ 9. Meanwhile, I am looking forward for more input from our specialist coaches and cyclists.

Welcome back to the world of 2 wheels Aston. Mountain bike with road tyres huh? From my experience I would have stayed with the knobbies. Road tyres, especially big fat ones attract a lot of punctures. Knobbies have the advantage of beign slightly tougher and thicker. They also allow you the option of going "off road" and onto the road verge when the situation is forced upon you. Call me someday and we may go on a cycling trip together but I am not into big noisy groups.

Thanks for the advice. I will ask the shop to find out how to get the original tyres too (spare?). Not sure about going off-road but I am game for trying longer rides next month. Let me know how I can get to contact you.

When I meant "off road" when the situation calls for it, I meant that riding bicycles to work and in the city may at times require you to ride off the road and onto the grass verge or even onto the sidewalk to avoid potentially dangerous stuations. You;ll do this best with knobbies on your rims. You'll notice I use them on mine. You can contact me at 012 3938370.

Are you going to work it on a GPS? Let me know whether it works out fine!
